Court of first instance
Common-law court responsible for judging ordinary civil cases involving sums higher than 7,600 euros or cases which have not been assigned to other courts. The court of first instance is also the only court competent in certain cases defined by law, irrespective of the amount at stake: civil status, divorce, child custody, adoption, succession, etc. When the court of first instance rules on criminal matters, it is called the correctional court.
