Celsius Temperature Scale (C) (1) Relating to, conforming to, or having the international thermometric scale on which the interval between the triple point of water and the boiling point of water is divided into 99.99 degrees with 0.01° representing the Triple Point and 100° the boiling point at one atmosphere of pressure, Abbreviation C, Compare to Centigrade Temperature Scale. The Celsius scale, which is identical to the centigrade scale, is named for the 18th-century Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who first proposed the use of a scale in which the interval between the freezing and boiling points of water is divided into 100 degrees. By international agreement, the term Celsius has officially replaced Centigrade. (2) Unit of measure for the Centigrade Temperature Scale of measuring temperature, as contrasted with the Fahrenheit unit of measure.
