Seepage (1) The passage of water or other fluid through a porpus medium, such as the passage of water through an earth embankment or masonry wall. (2) Groundwater emerging on the face of a stream bank. (3) The slow movement of water through small cracks, pores, Interstices, etc., of a material into or out of a body of surface or subsurface water. (4) The Interstitial movement of water that may take place through a dam, its foundation, or its Abutments. (5) The loss of water by infiltration into the soil from a canal, ditches, laterals, watercourse, reservoir, storage facilities, or other body of water, or from a field. Seepage is generally expressed as flow volume per unit of time. During the process of priming (a field during initial irrigation), the loss is called Absorption Loss.
