Meaning of Raman scattering

Raman scattering scattering of light by means of its interactions with the vibrational response of a molecular system. The scattered light is typically shifted to lower frequencies ( see stokes law), the frequency shift is equal to the vibrational frequency of the molecule, typically 1013 to 1014 hz. In spontaneous raman scattering ( see spontaneous light scattering), the scattered light is emitted in nearly all directions. In stimulated raman scattering ( see stimulated light scattering), the scattered light is emitted in the form of an intense beam. The emitted beam tends to be intense because it experiences large amplification by an amount given by egil, where g is the gain factor of stimulated raman scattering, i is the intensity of the incident laser beam in units of power per unit area, and l is the length of the interaction region.
