EC wine labelling regulation
EC wine labelling regulation: adopted by the European Commission on 29 April 2002 and due to enter into force on 1 January 2003. It is aimed at giving consumers more comprehensive information about the product they are buying and at harmonizing different approaches to labelling across the European Union. For example, labels will have to show information such as the sales designation, volume, alcoholic strength of the wine, the lot number and the name of the bottler or importer. Certain bottle shapes identified with a particular wine or wine region will be protected. Some optional terms, such as production methods, traditional expressions (described as having three characteristics: a legislative, simple and precise definition, a traditional use on the European Union market, i.e. at least ten years, and a notoriety in the mind of the consumer resulting from that definition and traditional use), names of vineyards and the meaning of “vintage year” are also defined. The regulation also sets out labelling requirements for wines originating outside the European Union. See also regulation.
