Salts Salts are the minerals that water picks up as it passes through the air, over and under the ground, and through household and industrial uses. A compound composed of the positive ion from a base and the negative ion from an acid, i.e., a metal ion and a nonmetal ion, such as KBr (Potassium Bromide). The proportions or concentrations of salts in water is a determining factor in evaluating its quality. The concentration of salts in fresh water is, on the average, so small that it is expressed in parts per million (ppm).
