Meaning of Sensitive Species

Sensitive Species (1) Those plant or animal species susceptible or vulnerable to activity impacts or habitat alterations. Species not yet officially listed but undergoing status review for listing on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) official threatened and endangered list, species whose populations are small and widely dispersed or restricted to a few localities, and species whose numbers are declining so rapidly that official listing may be necessary. Also see Endangered Species Act (ESA), Endangered Species and Threatened Species. (2) Those plant and animal species identified by a Regional Forester for which population viability is a concern as evidenced by: (a) significant current or predicted downward trends in population numbers or density, or (b) significant current or predicted downward trend in habitat capability that would reduce a species’ existing distribution.
