Meaning of Wild and Scenic Rivers (Act)

Wild and Scenic Rivers (Act) A national system established under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of free-flowing rivers and streams which possess one or more of the following outstanding remarkable values: (1) scenic, (2) recreational, (3) geological, (4) fish and wildlife, (5) historic or cultural, or (6) other values, including biological or ecological. There are three classifications of rivers or river segments – wild, scenic and recreational – with classifications based on the condition of the river and the adjacent lands at the time of the study. The act defines these classifications as follows: (1) Wild River – Those rivers or sections of rivers that are free of impoundments and generally inaccessible except by trail, with watersheds or shorelines essentially primitive and water unpolluted, representing vestiges of rivers in primitive America, (2) Scenic River – Those rivers or sections of rivers that are free of impoundments, with shorelines or watersheds still largely primitive and shorelines largely undeveloped, but accessible in places by roads, (3) Recreational River – Those rivers or sections of rivers that are readily accessible by road or railroad that may have some development along their shorelines, and that may have undergone some impoundments or diversions in the past. Also see Wild Rivers, Scenic Rivers, and Recreational Rivers for permitted activities and restrictions.
